Old hollow liquid measure (also quarter), which originally corresponded to the fourth part of a larger measure. The locally different volumes were 0.27 (Bavaria), 0.94 (Brunswick), 0.8 (Bremen), 0.9 (Hamburg, Lübeck), 0.97 (Hanover) and 1.145 (Prussia). The British quart in turn corresponds to 1.14 and the US quart to 0.946 litres. However, quart is also short for the bottle type quart de bouteille. See also under Hollow measures.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
