Potato head

One of the sites classified as a Grand Cru in French Alsace (Haut-Rhin region) in the municipality of Ammerschwihr within the Alsace Grand Cru appellation. It was not classified as a Grand Cru for a long time in 1932 due to two different soil types. This led to a decades-long dispute. It was argued that this circumstance also applied to other sites. Finally, from the 2007 vintage onwards, the wine was classified as the 51st Grand Cru. However, this excludes part of the historic Kaefferkopf from Grand Cru status. Only simple AOC Alsace may be produced on around 15 hectares in the future. Since the 2007 vintage, an exemption has also allowed the production of cuvées.
