The red grape variety originates from Italy. The origin (parentage) is unknown. The name is probably derived from the elongated grape shape (pigna = pine cone). It should not be confused with the Pignolo variety. However, Pignola is also a synonym for Forsellina, Pignola Valtellinese and Pinot Noir. The vine produces light, neutral-tasting red wines for blending. It is authorised in ten IGT wines in the entire Lombardy region. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
