Philippines

The presidential republic of the Philippines in South East Asia in the west of the Pacific with the capital Manila covers 300,000 square kilometres. Of the 7,641 islands, around 2,000 are inhabited. The Philippines are divided into three main island groups: Luzon (with the capital Manila) in the north, Visayas in the centre and Mindanao in the south. The Spanish navigator Ferdinand Magellan (1484-1521) landed on the island of Homonhon (Visayas) in 1521, where he died in battle. The Phlippines were subsequently colonised by Spain. After the Philippine-American War, the territory was controlled by the USA from 1901. After the end of the Second World War, the state gained its independence in 1946.
