Philippines

The presidential republic of the Philippines in South East Asia in the western Pacific Ocean with the capital Manila covers 300,000 square kilometres. Only a fifth of the 7,641 islands are inhabited. The largest are Luzon with Manila (109,965 km²), Mindanao (94,630 km²), Samar (13,080 km²), Negros (13,328 km²), Mindoro (9,735 km²), Panay (12,297 km²) and Palawan (14,649 km²). The Philippines were originally colonised by Negritos, later by Austronesians. Since the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan (1484-1521), the country has been colonised by Spain. After the Philippine-American War, it was controlled by the USA from 1901. After the end of the Second World War, the country gained its independence in 1946.
