The gigantic French corporate group Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy was formed in September 1987 through the merger of the fashion company Louis Vuitton and the Champagne and Spirits manufacturer Moët Hennessy. The reason was that the boards of these companies, Henry Racamier (Louis Vuitton) and Alain Chevalier (Moët Hennessy), feared a hostile takeover. Moët et Chandon and Hennessy had already merged in 1971. Alain Chevalier became president of the new company, while Henry Racamier became his deputy. Bernard Jean Étienne Arnault (*1949), the founder and current CEO, owns 47.5% of the shares and 64% of the voting rights of the company through his holding "Groupe Arnault".
