DOC area (also di Modena) for white, red and rosé wines in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. The vineyards cover 690 hectares and extend across all municipalities in the province of Modena.
All wines can be preceded by the wine type or grape variety, for example Rosso di Modena or Lambrusco di Modena. All spumante versions are produced in secco, semisecco, amabile and dolce. A separate Pignoletto DOC area was created in 2014 for wines from the Grechetto Gentile = Pignoletto variety.
Bianco Spumante and Bianco Frizzante are produced from at least 85% Montuni (Montù), Trebbiano Modenese and other Trebbiano varieties. The Lambrusco Spumante, Rosato Spumante, Frizzante, Rosato Frizzante and Novello Frizzante wines are made from Lambrusco a Foglia Frastagliata = Enantio, Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Grasparossa, Lambrusco Maestri, Lambrusco Marani, Lambrusco Montericco, Lambrusco Oliva and Lambrusco Salamino (zum. 85%), as well as Ancellotta, Malbo Gentile and Fortana (max. 15%).
