Mitshurin Ivan

The Russian botanist and plant breeder Ivan Vladimirovic Micurin or Michurin (1855-1935) was born in Kozlov. Because of his later great successes, his home town was renamed Mitschurinsk after him. He succeeded in breeding frost-resistant fruit varieties for Russia's continental climate, which made fruit growing possible for large areas of this country with low winter temperatures in the first place. He did not receive any support under the Tsarist regime, but shortly after the October Revolution he received large funds and subsequently created 300 new varieties, including many new varieties of vines. Incidentally, one of the varieties is also called Mitschurinski. However, his undeniable achievements must also be viewed critically in part.
