The native Frenchman Nicholas Herbemont (1771-1839) was extensively involved as a grape breeder in the USA in Columbia, South Carolina . The varietyHerbemontHerbemont is named after him, which he selected in 1790. In 1828, Herbemont provided the winemaker Nicholas Longworth (1783-1863) with several cuttings of the variety Jacquez that he had selected, which he received from Isaac Lenoir from South Carolina.
