Goldkaul

single vineyard in the municipality of Dernau in the German wine-growing region of Ahr. The name means "gold pit" (Kaul = pit). The steep site facing south to west at an altitude of 125 to 260 metres above sea level is designated with 50 hectares, of which only 18 hectares are planted with vines. The soils consist of light to medium-heavy slate weathering with partly greywacke and sloping loam. In the flatter areas there is sandy loam with gravel subsoil. Two-thirds of the grapes cultivated here are Pinot Noir, as well as the varieties Blauer Portugieser, Domina, Dornfelder, Frühburgunder, Regent, Riesling and Müller Thurgau. The Riske Reinhold winery, for example, has shares in the site.
