DOC area for red wines, rosé wines and white wines in the Italian region or island of Sicily The zone includes the municipalities of Acireale, Aci Sant'Antonio, Belpasso, Biancavilla, Castiglione di Sicilia, Giarre, Linguaglossa, Mascali, Milo, Nicolosi, Paternò, Pedara, Piedimonte Etneo, Randazzo, Sant'Alfio, Santa Maria di Licodia, Santa Venerina, Trecastagni, Viagrande and Zafferana Etnea in the province of Catania. More than 130 additional geographical indications (Sites = Vigna) are allowed on the label. This is a very old wine growing area. The "Storia die Vini d'Italia" (History of Italian Wines) published in 1596 mentions wines from here and attributes their high quality to the fly ash blown by the nearby volcano Etna (Mongibello).
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
