single vineyard in the municipality of Erden ( Bernkastel area) in the German Moselle wine-growing region on the left bank of the river of the same name. Centuries ago, the stone steps that gave the site its name were built to provide better access, or access at all, to the vineyards in the steep terraces for the arduous vineyard work. Wine was already cultivated here in Roman times, as evidenced by an ancient wine press that was found and partially excavated in the middle of the vineyard in 1998. The masonry structure measuring 10 by 14 metres with several chambers dates from the second century AD and is thus the oldest known Roman wine press north of the Alps.
