Term for the type of formation of one-year-old shoots. There are different names depending on the length of the shoots or the eyes (buds) left on them during pruning. A very short shoot is called a cone with 1 to 3 eyes, a medium-length shoot is called a stretcher with 4 to 7 eyes and a long shoot is called a cane with 8 to 15 eyes. The new, fruit-bearing shoots (summer shoots) develop from the eyes.
There are also different names for the shape of the arch; these are Picture 1 - flat arch (stretcher); Picture 2 - half arch; Picture 3 - pendulum arch; Picture 4 - 2 half arches and 2 full arches (high culture with heart cut).
However, there is no uniform standardisation in this respect; the number of eyes often differs slightly from country to country. The term bow is also used for both the stretcher and the rod.
