Clarendon Hills

The winery is located in Blewitt Springs (a suburb of Adelaide) in the McLaren Vale area of South Australia. The owner and cellar master is the former biochemist Roman Bratasiuk. As a career changer he produced his first garage wine in 1990. His own vineyard area is only one hectare, mainly grapes are bought from contract winegrowers. The wines are produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Grenache Noir and Pinot Noir. The reasons for the high quality are among others old vines and the resulting low yields. The vinification is carried out according to traditional methods with natural yeast fermentation, long maceration, no fining and filtration, and only minimal addition of sulphur. The wines are aged for 18 months with a mix of used and new French oak barriques. The flagship of the house is the "Astralis Shiraz", which was first produced in 1994 and immediately attracted international attention. Particularly outstanding vintages are 1994, 1995 and 1996 (see also under Wine of the Century).
