Chauvet Jules

The French private scholar and viticultural expert Jules Chauvet (1907-1989), whose family owned a wine trading house, devoted himself intensively to the subject of winemaking throughout his life. After graduating from high school, he engaged in basic biochemical research and also maintained his own private laboratory. After the Second World War, he concentrated on oenological research and worked closely with research laboratories in Paris. He published his findings with articles in viticultural journals (e.g. La Bourgogne Viticole). Chauvet was the first to classify the different sites in Beaujolais and partly also in Burgundy on the basis of taste descriptions and to record this systematically. Some of his former assistants later held high offices at French universities and at the INAO. He also maintained contacts with many French viticultural institutions, many of whose prominent representatives spent research stays with him and benefited from his work.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
