The estate is located near Nantes in the Loire estuary and was founded around the year 1000. It is and has always been owned by the de Goulaine family, with the exception of the period from 1788 to 1858, when it was sold to the Dutch shipowner Piter Deurbroucq during the French Revolution. In 1858, Patrice de Goulaine brought the estate back into the family's possession. In 2022, the Renaissance castle was acquired by Hervé and Karina Lecesne with the aim of keeping the castle alive by developing historical tourism and event activities. A special feature is the aviary (cage) set up in 1984 by Marquis Robert de Goulaine (1933-2010), which exhibits hundreds of tropical butterflies flying freely among tropical plants.
