Cellar sign

A device used in the past, before the use of labels, to identify individual batches of wine in a cellar. A common form were semicircular signs in the form of a wide coat hanger up to 15 centimetres long, with an eyelet at the apex for hanging. But there were also other forms. The cellar signs were used to mark the individual compartments (compartment on a shelf) in which the bottles, which were not labelled at that time, were stored. They were mostly made of ceramic (earthenware), cheaper versions were made of wood or slate.
