Zimmermann Eduard

The German viticulture expert Dr. Georg Zimmermann (1907-1993) was born as the son of a winemaker in Rheinhessen. He studied agriculture and received his doctorate in 1934 with a thesis on "A contribution to precise experimental work in viticulture". At the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, he received his first insight into breeding research under Dr. Erwin Baur (1875-1933). He was supported in his dissertation by Georg Scheu (1879-1949), who later became a friend of his, at the Alzey vine breeding institute. After his death he was appointed head of the Alzey vine breeding in 1950. He continued the suitability tests of the numerous varieties created by Scheu and submitted their approval to the Federal Plant Variety Office. His work also focused on the quantity/quality ratio and behaviour research. Zimmermann defined the goal of vine breeding as being that water and sugar could be dispensed with during winemaking. In the 1960s he pleaded for the adoption of the French appellation system. Zimmermann gave numerous lectures and wrote many publications on viticulture, grape breeding and cellar management.
