The winery is located nine kilometres from the city of Merida (Badajoz province) in the DO Ribera del Guadiana in the Spanish region of Extremadura. It was founded in 1999 by the de Alvear family. Its vineyards cover 61 hectares of vineyards, planted with the red varieties Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot, and the white varieties Pardina (Pardillo), Cayetana Blanca, Montúa and Viognier. The majority of the local wines are produced as VT Extremadura, the rest under the DO Ribera del Guadiana. The wines are bottled under the brand names Altara, Celtus, Equus, Miraculus, Torremayor and Viña Santa Marina.
