Chilean-born Agustin Francisco Huneeus founded Franciscan Estates in California in 1985. In 1990 he founded the Veramonte winery in his native Chile. His son Agustin F. Huneeus is also active in the company. Rafael Tirado was hired as winemaker. The first wine was produced in 1996. The vineyards in the Casablanca area cover 350 hectares. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (main variety), Carmenère, Chardonnay, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. Premium wine is the "Primus", which is blended from one third each of Carmenère, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged for 12 months in barrique. The winery has been owned by the US beverage company Constellation Brands since 1999.
