canton (Italian Ticino) in the Italian Switzerland with the capital Bellinzona. It borders Italy and is divided into the two parts Sopraceneri and Sottoceneri. The southernmost and most scenic Swiss canton is also called the "sunny corner of Switzerland" due to its many hours of sunshine. It is one of the six Swiss wine regions. The vineyards cover 1,028 hectares of vineyard area. A special feature is also the Misoxtal (Mesolcina) located in the canton of Graubünden with 50 hectares of vineyard area. The climate resembles Mediterranean conditions, but there are high precipitation. A large part of the approximately 3,800 winemakers owns only small parcel and practices viticulture as a secondary source of income. Notable Ticino winegrowing communities include Biasca, Castel San Pietro, Chiasso, Giornico, Giubiasco, Gordola, Gudo, Malvaglia, Morbio, Morcote, Rivera, Rovio, Stabio, Tenero, and Verscio. The best locations are between the lakes Lago Maggiore and Lago di Lugano, as well as Bellinzona and Locarno.
For me, Lexicon from wein.plus is the most comprehensive and best source of information about wine currently available.
