The state-owned company Systembolaget (colloquially also Systemet or Bolaget) in Sweden has a long history. In Sweden there is a special social approach to alcohol. Through various prohibitive measures, attempts have been made time and again to restrict alcohol consumption. In the 18th and 19th centuries there were regulations on the production and import of alcoholic beverages. In 1850, miners in Falun founded the first company, Systembolaget, which took over the sale and serving of alcohol in the town in the public interest. The profits were used for charitable purposes. Similar enterprises were established in many towns until the early 20th century.
