Sulphur cuts

Schwefelschnitte Agent (also sweet brandy cuts) for cleaning and preserving empty wine barrels. In the past, sulphur cuts were also used to indirectly sulphurise wine by filling the barrel with wine without cleaning. Cotton mineral fibre paper soaked in molten sulphur is usually used as a carrier material. The shape is rectangular with a pre-punched hole for hanging. However, there are also sulphur rings. In any case, the material should not drip.

The individual sulphur cuts usually contain between three and six grams of sulphur. The burning process then produces around twice as much sulphur dioxide. See also under spice sulphur and regarding the practical use of sulphur cuts in viticulture under dry preservation.
