The winery is located in the municipality of Piesport (Bernkastel area) in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. It has been family-owned for 350 years. Since 1988, it has been run by Heinz Welter. His wife Silvia is the daughter of Theo Später and Maria Später, née Veit, who have developed the business, which originated from an ancient Piesport winegrowing dynasty, into a steadily more successful bottled wine business since 1958. A wine tavern is attached. The vineyards cover seven hectares of vineyards in the Domherr, Falkenberg, Goldtröpfchen and Grafenberg (Piesport), as well as Ohligsberg (Wintrich) sites. They are mainly planted with Riesling (65%), as well as Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir. Depending on the characteristics of the grapes, the Rieslings are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks or in the classic wooden barrels with the most natural clarification and maturation possible. The Prädikat system with Kabinett, Auslese, Spätlese etc. continues to be intensively cultivated, thus guaranteeing natural, unsugared and non-concentrated wines. The red wines are fermented on the mash for two to three weeks, sometimes with a little rapping (stems) added to emphasise the tannins and additionally to break up any primary fruit that is too superficial. They are mostly aged for one and a half to almost two years in partly new, but mainly also used barriques and bottled completely unfiltered.
