Söhnlein

The German sparkling wine house in Schlierstein am Rhein was founded by Johann Jacob Söhnlein (1827-1912) in 1864 under the name "Rheingauer Schaumweinfabrik". In 1868, the sparkling wine produced from base wines from the Schloss Johannisberg Winery was given the name "Rheingold". This achieved a tremendous degree of popularity and became an important advertising medium as a christening sparkling wine for the new imperial navy and for the music of Richard Wagner, as well as being a top brand for the noble gastronomy of the international shipping lines. According to a decree of Kaiser Wilhelm I (1797-1888), the warships of the German Navy were only allowed to receive their christening with Söhnleinsekt. When the Bayreuth Festival opened in 1876 with the four-part opera cycle "Ring of the Nibelungs", Richard Wagner (1813-1883) consecrated the Söhnlein sparkling wine as Rhine gold. The name was the first sparkling wine brand ever to be officially protected.
