The winery in Chile was founded by the noble Don Melchor Concha y Toro (1833-1892) in 1883. The eldest of three brothers, he had graduated as a lawyer in 1857 and started a political career in 1864. The company started with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Merlot imported from Bordeaux.
