The "Bodegas Riojanas" winery is located in the municipality of Cenicero, 20 kilometres from Lograño, in the centre of the Spanish Rioja sub-region Rioja Alta. It was founded in 1890 by the two families Artacho and Carreras, and since 1933 it has been the sole property of the Artacho family. Far-reaching improvements in the cellar and vineyards were completed in 1990 at great financial expense. The company's own vineyards cover 300 hectares of vineyards, mainly planted with the Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, Garnacha Tinta, Viura, Malvasía de Rioja and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties. Grapes are also bought in. Around three million kilograms of grapes are processed annually. Around 24,000 barrique barrels are available for the ageing process. Among others, the red wine brands Albina, Chanchales and Puerta Vieja (all from Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano), Monte Real (Tempranillo) and Peñamonte (Tinta de Toro = original form of Tempranillo) are produced. About 40% of the production is exported.
