Italian term (Latin potere = to be able; for power, capacity, potency) for a country estate or manor. The term is also a popular and frequently used part of a winery designation, which is usually prefixed.
The terms Château and Domaine (France), Estate (New World), Palácio (Portugal) and Schloss (German-speaking countries) have a special meaning in other countries. They are associated with a certain quality and tradition, which implies a high standard of wine production. In Italy, this most closely corresponds to Podere or Tenuta.
