Dear Augustin

The legendary Viennese balladeer, bagpiper and impromptu poet is said to have actually lived. Only the first letter of the surname of Augustin N. (1645-1685) is known from the official death list. However, some sources give the name Markus Augustin. In his favourite pub "Zum roten Dachel" in Vienna's 1st district (later the "Griechenbeisl" at Fleischmarkt 11 next to the Greek Church of the Holy Trinity), he regularly performed his funny and crude songs and jokes. However, the song "Oh Du lieber Augustin", which was very popular in Vienna and often sung at wine taverns, was not written until after his death around 1800.

The picture on the left shows a plaque on the "Griechenbeisl" pub on Vienna's Fleischmarkt; the picture in the centre shows the first verse of the song and the picture on the right shows the "Augustin Fountain" on Augustinplatz in Vienna's 7th district of Neubau.
