The cooperative winery is located in the municipality of Villalba de los Barros (Badajoz province) in the DO Ribera del Guadiana in the Spanish region of Extremadura. It was founded in 1962 by 46 winegrowers and now has over 500 members. They cultivate a total of 3,000 hectares of vineyards, two-thirds of which are planted with white wines and one-third with red wines. The most important white wines are Pardina, Cayetana Blanca, Montúa, Macabeo and Alarije, the most important red Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The winery is considered a pioneer in the production of high quality wines in Extremadura. The red wines are partly aged in barriques. The Cooperativa Montevirgen is a member of the large, nationwide umbrella organisation "Sociedad Cooperativa Viñaoliva".

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
