The winery is located in St Helena in the Napa Valley (Napa County, California). It was founded in 1876 by the brothers Jakob Beringer (1845-1915) and Frederick Beringer (1840-1901), who had immigrated from Germany. The two came from Mainz and bought an 87 hectare (215 acre) estate next to Charles Krug's vineyard a year earlier. Around 40,000 gallons of wine (18,000 cases) were produced in the very first year.

During Prohibition (1920-1933), Beringer was allowed to continue producing bulk wine thanks to a state licence and sent dried grapes to hobby winemakers, thereby maintaining profitability. In 1934, it was the first winery in California to offer guided tours and wine tastings organised by cellar master Fred Abruzzini after the ban on alcohol was lifted, making it a pioneer of wine tourism in the Napa Valley.

If I were to rate websites, you would deserve the highest rating. It is rare to come across websites that provide such a large amount of data and are still so intuitive to use. Respect for the lovingly researched and informatively prepared encyclopedia. Keep it up!
