The white grape variety is a new variety between the red varieties Prokupac x Pinot Noir. Synonyms are Garganja, Jouplanka, Rebula, Ribolla Gialla, Youplyanca, Žhupljanka, Zouplanca and Žsuplyanka.

The cross was made in Serbia by grower Dragoslav Milisavljevic. Variety protection was granted in 1970. Župljanka is also a synonym for Chasselas, but there is no genetic relationship to it.
The late-ripening vine is resistant to botrytis, but susceptible to both types of mildew and sensitive to frost. It produces fresh, neutral white wines.
