Zork

Alternative closure for bottles developed in Australia and first introduced to the public in 2004. It consists of three parts: cap, foil and flask. The cap, made of polyethylene, encloses the neck of the bottle. The aluminium foil (like a screw cap) is welded inside the cap and prevents oxygen from entering the bottle. The flask, also made of polyethylene, is fixed inside the bottle and extends into the bottle neck like a stopper. Only this flask, which is welded to the film, is in contact with the wine. The flask material has been tested by the AWRI (Australian Wine Research Institute) and shows no negative effects on the wine. All materials have been approved by the American FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and by the EU. Polyethylene is one of the purest types of polymer and has been used in the food and beverage packaging industry for many years. The lower part of the closure cap consists of a tear-off band looped in a spiral around the neck, which is used to release the cap and remove it with a "plop". A 12-month test series showed that the degradation of sulphur dioxide is slower than with plastic corks, but faster than with screw caps or natural corks. See also under closures.
