The red grape variety is a complex interspecific new variety between (Smuglianka x Dvietes Zila) x Jublinaja Novgoroda (Précoce de Malingre x (Russkii Konkord = Concord x Amurensis)). Synonyms or breeding numbers are Dvietes 4-2-108 and Latvian Zilga. Genes of Vitis amurensis, Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera are contained. The hybrid was crossed in 1964 by the breeder Pauls Sukatniks in Latvia (USSR). The vine is extremely frost-resistant down to minus 40 °Celsius. It produces purple-coloured red wines with a slight foxtone. The variety is also used as table grape. It is cultivated in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus. As a curiosity, wine is also made from it in Finland. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
