The white grape variety (also Freiburg 339) is a new variety between Traminer(Gewürztraminer) x Riesling, which was confirmed by DNA analyses published in 2013. The crossbreeding was carried out in 1939 by Dr. Johannes Zimmermann (1907-1998) at the State Viticulture Institute in Freiburg (Baden-Württemberg). The name was given after the noble family of the same name, which had their seat at Zähringen Castle near Freiburg. However, the variety has not acquired any significance. It was a crossing partner in the new breeding of Souvignier Gris. In 2010 no stocks were reported (Kym Anderson).
