Zähringer

The white grape variety (breeding no. FR 339) is a new cross between Traminer(Gewürztraminer) x Riesling, which was confirmed by DNA analyses published in 2013. The cross was made in 1939 by Dr Johannes Zimmermann (1907-1998) at the State Viticultural Institute in Freiburg (Baden-Württemberg). The name was given after the noble family who had their seat at Zähringen Castle near Freiburg. The variety was a crossing partner in the new Souvignier Gris variety. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
