The Republic of Yemen (Arabic الجمهورية اليمنية, DMG al-Ǧumhūriyya al-Yamaniyya) in the Middle East, in the south of the Arabian Peninsula with the capital Sanaa (de facto Aden) covers 528,076 km². It borders Saudi Arabia to the north, Oman to the east, the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea to the south and the Red Sea to the west. The states of Djibouti and Eritrea are about 20 and 30 kilometres away across the Red Sea. Yemen also includes the Socotra archipelago and numerous smaller islands in the Bab al-Mandab in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. However, this state of Yemen failed due to the civil war, and several de facto states currently exist on the former state territory.
