The state on the eastern Rocky Mountains in the USA with the capital Cheyenne covers 253,335 km². It borders Montana to the north, South Dakota and Nebraska to the east, Colorado to the south, Utah to the south-west and Idaho to the west. Wyoming was admitted to the Union in 1890 as the 44th state.

Viticulture has only been practised on a significant scale in Wyoming since the turn of the millennium. The first trials with frost-hardy American and French hybrids took place in the 1990s in the milder locations. One pioneer was Table Mountain Vineyards, which began producing wine commercially in 2004. Due to the harsh climate, the short vegetation cycle and the low local demand, viticulture remains a niche.
