The winery is located in the municipality of Bernkastel-Kues (Saarallee 31) in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. The family's wine-growing tradition dates back to 1636. The actual founder of the winery is considered to be the Prussian Member of Parliament Dr. Hugo Thanisch. The winery caused an international sensation in the mid-19th century and the wines achieved the highest prices at auctions. The wines were prized by the German imperial and English royal families. In 1985, a 1921 "Bernkasteler Doctor Trockenbeerenauslese" was auctioned in Trier for 11,100 Marks at a rarity auction of the VDP. The winery is run by the eleventh generation of the family, the great-granddaughter Sofia Thanisch (four generations of women).

The vineyards cover six hectares of vines in the single vineyards Alte Badstube on Doctorberg, Doctor (there has been an estate here since the beginning of the 18th century) and Lay in Bernkastel. They are planted exclusively with Riesling, which is predominantly ungrafted cultivated. The wines are vinified very individually in small containers, fruity-sweet, off-dry or dry, depending on the variety and origin of the grapes. The winery is a founding member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates).
