The red grape variety is an open-pollinated seedling of the Concord variety. Accordingly, the father variety is unknown. It contains genes from Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was selected in the USA in 1863 by the breeder Schuyler Worden (1806-1901) in Oswego County ( New York State). The name was given by a gardener friend, J. A. Place. The variety was a crossing partner of the new varieties Champanel, Pontiac, Profusion, Sheridan and Van Buren. The vine is frost-hardy to minus 40° Celsius and susceptible to anthracnose. It is also used as table grape. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
