Winegrowing region

General term for larger areas used for viticulture. This is regulated differently in the various countries and can be read there. See also under vineyard area.

In Austria, wine-growing region is the hierarchically highest territorial unit. These are Bergland (Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg), Steirerland (Styria) and Weinland (Burgenland, Lower Austria and Vienna). Land wines may be marketed under this designation of origin. The lowest quality level wine without geographical indication (formerly the now forbidden designation table wine) may only be marketed under the origin "Austria", "Austrian wine" or similar, as well as (if the grapes come from several countries) "wine from several countries of the European Union".
