Professional title for an intermediary in the purchase and sale of wine who, in his own name and on behalf of others, brokers wine, grape must or grapes on a commission basis (4 to 5%). His costs are normally shared equally by the buyer and seller. They also often act at auctions, as the real buyer usually does not want to appear in person. In Germany there are currently about 200 full-time wine commission agents who handle more than half of all wine purchases.
