Widmark Erik

The Swedish chemist Erik Matteo Prochet Widmark (1889-1945) was a professor at the Institute of Medicinal Chemistry at Lund University. He became a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1938. Widmark was the first scientist to systematically research the absorption, distribution and elimination of alcohol in the human body. Based on his research, in 1922 he developed a method for determining the alcohol level - i.e. the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) - named after him as "Widmark's formula". Widmark was also one of the first to warn of the carcinogenic effects of fried foods. The ICADTS (International Conference on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety) has been awarding the Widmark Award for scientific achievements in alcohol, other drugs and traffic safety since 1965.
