White Veltliner

The white grape variety originates from Austria. It is a mutation of Roter Veltliner. However, different varieties are or were possibly described under this name. The White Veltliner described by Lambert Joseph Leopold Babo (1790-1862) and Johann Metzger (1789-1852) is possibly Rotweißer Veltliner. The ampelographer Franz Xaver Trummer (1800-1858) also described a White Veltliner in his ampelographic work, the identity of which is not clear. In any case, a variety is still cultivated under this name in very small stocks in Austria. In 2016, however, no stocks were reported (Kym Anderson). See also under Veltliner.
