The white grape variety originates from Hungary. There are around 70 synonyms, which indicates its great age and formerly widespread distribution. Some of these are Augster Biely, Augster Blanc, Augster Gelb, Bajor Fehér, Beli Horvatovscek, Budai Gohér, Casarola, Cascarolo, Cacscarolo Bianco, Cserbajor Fehér, Fehér Gohér, Frühweiße, Gohér, Grüner Lagler, Koerteszoeloe, Kozma, Ragusana, Ranina, Som Bajor, Török Gohér, Weißer Lagler and Weißer Fingerhut.

According to DNA analyses carried out in 2021, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Alba Imputotato x Lisztes Fehér. It should not be confused with the Italian variety Cascarolo Bianco, as the pomologist Hermann Goethe (1837-1911) wrongly assumed. The variety was a parent of the Blauer Augster and Tihanyi varieties. It is an all-female grape variety, which requires cross-pollination.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
