The wine guide was founded in 1992 by René Gabriel, Wolfram Meister and Christine Piontek. René Gabriel (*1957) is considered one of the best-known Swiss wine critics and wine journalists. Originally conceived as an independent newsletter, the information service saw itself as an "independent newsletter for everyone who wants to know more about wine". The first issues were published as a monthly loose-leaf collection without a glossy layout.

Takeover by media house Konradin Selection

In July 2008, the magazine was taken over 100% by the German media house Konradin Selection GmbH in Mainz. The new owner is a 100% subsidiary of the Konradin media group (including "Bild der Wissenschaft", "Industrieanzeiger", "Computer Zeitung" and "natur + kosmos"). Among other things, it already publishes "Selection", a wine customer magazine for specialist retailers and the catering trade. René Gabriel initially continued to work as an author and consultant. However, he retired from active involvement with WeinWisser at the end of 2016. Wine journalist and wine critic Giuseppe Lauria became editor-in-chief in 2016. Wolfgang Faßbender later took over as editor-in-chief. The publisher is Konradin Selection GmbH and the Konradin Media Group.
