The winery is located in the municipality of Elsarn (Straß im Straßertale) in the Lower Austrian wine growing region of Kamptal. It has been managed by the family since 1871 and has been in the hands of the fourth generation of the family since 1994, when Reinhard Waldschütz, a trained viticulture and cellar master, took over the management. Since 2010, son Markus has also been working in the business. The vineyards comprise 27 hectares of vineyards in the Hasel and Stangl areas. They are 80% planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Welschriesling and Frühroter Veltliner, and 20% with the red wine varieties Zweigelt and Merlot. The natural cultivation is done with a high number of vines with 3,800 to 4,000 vines per hectare, short pruning and defoliation of the grape zone. Selective manual harvesting in two to three passes ensures that only thinning out the grapes results in reduced yield, physiologically ripe and healthy grapes for processing.
The aim of the house is to produce fruity, fresh wines with a typical taste of the region. After cool and slow fermentation lasting up to five weeks, the light white wines mature on the fine yeast until the end of January. After the first filtration, the wines are bottled at the end of February in order to preserve the extreme fermentation carbonic acid. The red wines are partly aged in barriques. For the top wines (white wine reserves) only the three to five most beautiful grapes are left per vine and harvested extremely late. These remain on the fine yeast until the end of summer. These are the wines Riesling Wechselberg Reserve, Grüner Veltliner Aturo Kamptal DAC Reserve and Grüner Veltliner Rosengarten Kamptal DAC Reserve.
