The white grape variety originates from Croatia; the name means something like "God-given" or "gift from God" (bog = God, danuša = given). Synonyms are Bogdanjusa, Bogdanoucha, Bogdanuša Bijela, Bogdanuša Mala, Bogdanuša Vela, Bogdanuša Vela Mladinka, Bojdanusa, Hvarka, Mladeinka, Vrbanjka and Vrbljanka.
