Vitis albuelis

This is the name of the white grape variety mentioned by the Roman wine author Columella (1st half of the 1st century) in his work "De re rustica". His contemporary Pliny the Elder (23-79) mentions the probably same vine under the name "Vitis alba" (Uva Alba). The hypothesis that it could be an ancestor of the Elbling is obsolete due to the meanwhile partly clarified ancestry of the Elbling. See also under Ancient grape varieties and Ancient wines as well as under vine systematics.
