Term commonly used in Germany for larger wineries or wineries that are mostly owned by the state. Some were established there in the 19th century during the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1815) from the secularised property of the Church, especially under the reign of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), but also later towards the end of the century. The objective of these "model/teaching wineries" was and is in part still today to spread modern viticultural production methods among the winegrowers.
