Visan

Independent municipal area in the Département Vaucluse in the southern French appellation Côtes du Rhône-Villages (see AOC regulations there). Since 1966, the commune has been allowed to additionally indicate the name on the label. Viticulture was promoted here in the Middle Ages by the Order of the Temple. From 1317 until the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, the area was part of the "Enclave des papes" (papal estates). The vineyards cover 420 hectares of vineyards on stony and calcareous reddish clay soils. Red, rosé and white wines are produced. A special wine is the "Cuvée du Marot", produced only in small quantities, which is tasted in July at the annual wine festival. Only grapes from vines over 50 years old are used for this. Well-known producers are Cave Coopérative Les Coteaux Visan, Domaine de la Cantharide, Domaine de la Costechaude and Clos du Père Clément.
