The winery is located in the municipality of Villabuena in the Spanish Rioja sub-region of Rioja Alavesa. It was founded in 1880 by Francisco Javier Solano y Eulate, the Marqués de la Solana. Following the advice of the famous Bordeaux oenologist Pineau, he matured his wines in oak barrels for the first time and marketed them under the name "Marqués de la Solana" at the time. After his death, his daughters Maria Solano (grandmother of the current owners) and Maria Teresa inherited the property and changed the name to "Bodegas de Crianza S.M.S." (abbreviation of the family name). The estate was completely renovated in the 1970s. It was not given its current name until 1996 after the grandmother Maria Solano, who was named "Marquesa". The current owners, the fourth generation of the family, are Juan Pablo de Simón and his siblings. The fifth generation, Pablo and Jaime des Simón, will continue the family tradition.
